Welcome to Faculty Instructional Technology Resource! This site is designed to help you learn about the various Instructional Technology Services (ITS) support and resources at the University of Redlands. The information on the site is meant to be reviewed asynchronously (on your own time) and when you need it. If you are needing synchronous one on one support you can book a consultation.

This site will give you a broad view of the following topics along with linking out to other resources from the University of Redlands and beyond.

Technology

The first set of modules in the site are set up as tutorials and information on many of the tools you will use during your educational journey here at the University of Redlands.

Canvas - Canvas is the learning management system of the University of Redlands, and the tool you are using now. All courses have a Canvas site created and students are automatically enrolled. Many students expect a to supplement their in class time with Canvas resources. This module provides video and text tutorials to help you navigate and build your course.

Kaltura - Kaltura is a screen capture and video repository tool. This tool is integrated with Canvas allowing you to create videos that can be uploaded to a class. As a faculty member this is a great tool to make supplemental videos and can be used in more then one class or a way for students to do asynchronous presentations.

Microsoft Teams - Microsoft Teams is a powerful tool that provides a workspace for both you and your classes. The tool has individual teams where you can communicate with other faculty, staff, or students. It also has a web conferencing tool so that you can run classes or meet with students remotely. This module provides how to guides for accessing and using the tool.

Zoom - Zoom is a web conferencing tool. You can use it to remotely meet with students, faculty, and staff. This module provides how to guides for accessing and using the tool.

Navigate - Navigate is a student-focused advising and university resource tool that will help keep students on the path toward academic success and timely graduation. It's made up of a mobile app and a website, giving students the tools need to make the best decisions to timely complete your education. This module provides links to training content.

Self Service - Self Service is where faculty can find information related to their classes and provide grades for their students. For students self service has multiple tools to manage their classes and inform an educational experience here at the University of Redlands. This module provides links to training content.

Cyber Security - To make sure your data is protected it is important to practice good Cyber Security. At the University of Redlands we use a two factor authentication tool called Duo. This tool helps insure that only you can access your log in. This module talks about the basics of cyber security and tutorials on how to set up and use Duo.

Generative AI and Copilot - Generative AI has grown in ability and use over the last few years. This multi-module section will provide you with tools to better understand the technology. The first module focuses on Microsoft 365's generative AI chat tool Copilot. Students, faculty, and staff have access to Copilot. The second module provides a pragmatic risk of the use of generative AI in higher education, the model will cover how to integrate the technology into class work, prepare students for a world that uses the technology, and discuss the ethical, educational, and moral limitations of the technology. The last module is from Rush University and is a Creative Commons modules used to teach students AI literacy.

Other tools - This module holds information on tools that we have not created an individual module for. There may be a variety of tutorials and linked information in this module to help you use the tools.

Pedagogy/Andragogy

This next section of the Canvas site provides pedagogical related tools and readings. As an instructor you may want to look over this content to build off your current use of the modality/tool or find an tool/modality you would like to try. Along with providing tools this section also provides recommendations for working with a deserve student population.

Syllabus Statements and other useful resources - This section hold information you may want to add or are required to add your syllabi.

Teaching modalities - At the University of Redlands you can teach your class in multiple modalities. These modalities range from fully in person to fully asynchronously online, with many classes falling in between. This module provides a discussion of the major teaching modalities you may run into, or what to utilize. The module also provides some research or supplemental videos about the modality.

Pedagogy and Andragogy for Diverse Students - The University of Redlands educates a deserve student populations, this at times can run counter to some of the historic teaching practices/curricula in higher education. This module discusses some pedagogical and andragogical (adult learner) techniques for some of the diverse identities you will most likely encounter. The module separates out some of the identities, but it should be noted that people are composed of multiple identities that interact and intersect.

Universal design and accessibility - UD is defined as an approach characterized by proactively thinking about and designing products, systems, services, and environments to be usable by all people (to the greatest extent possible), without the need for accommodation, adaptation, or specialized design. This process, related to teaching of a diverse population, expends to designing all courses and material to be accessible to all populations. Designing your courses with UD in mind will reduce students needs to disclose accommodation needs and empower your students to learn with out worry. This module talks about what universal design is and hour you can implement it into your courses.

Teaching for a Large Class - The University of Redlands strives to maintain small class sizes. This though may not be the case in all classes, such as introductory classes. This module provides some tips for teaching classes where your student body is larger then the standard number.

Active Learning - Active learning is an approach to education that places an emphasis on involving students in the learning process. In active learning, students are not just passive recipients of information; rather, they are active participants in their own learning. This module provides information on how you could incorporate active learning strategies into your classes.

Gamification - There are various ways for students to get engaged with your class. One such method is to gamify your course. Gamification is not just added games to your course, but actively implementing game mechanics into the structure of the course. This module talked more about this process and tools available. It also provide literature about the process.

Narrative Techniques - Narrative Techniques are a type of teaching strategies that utilized story telling to promote learning and understanding. This module provides links to the Center for Digital learning Sharepoint site on the topic.

Feedback and Learning Checks - Feedback on assignments is a key tool to assist in the learning process. Students both expect and deserve feedback throughout the course and at the end. This section talks about how to provide such feed back.

Building community - Whether your class is a quick four week online course or a 14 week course building community in the classroom can enhance students learning and promote retention. This module will discuss some strategies to build community and collaboration in your courses.

ITS Spaces

This last section provides information about some of the instructional technology spaces on campus. These spaces are available to us to enhance your curricula. As always it is best to schedule a consultation to discuss these spaces and brainstorm ideas on how best to use them.

Makerspace - A maker spaces in a space on campus for students, faculty, and staff to make things. In room 112 of the Armacost building the University of Redlands Makerspace provides machinery such as 3D printers, laser cutters, and CNC drills to help prototype and visualize projects. This module discusses aspects of the maker movement, links to resources, and project ideas.

XR - Ranging from augmented reality, where virtual items are seeing in physical space to virtual reality, fully enclosing yourself in a virtual environment, XR or extended reality connects the physical and the virtual. The University of Redlands currently has space in 140 of the Armacost building along with 30 Oculus Quest 2 headsets. This module will discuss the space and provide project ideas.
